The Newport Session @ Newport Bowls Club

A big thanks to all those who turned up for our first Celtic Session at the Newport Bowls Club last night. We had a solid 2 hours of tunes and songs, with stragglers lingering on until stumps (or whatever the bowling term is). Hope you can all come along again on 4th November. There’s a core list of tunes we’ll be drawing from to start things off (on this site), but come and play other ones too - the list will expand and change with time. Learning tip: youtube a tune and play along with the version that is at the right speed for you – over and over again! When these tunes start appearing in your dreams, you know you’re getting into the groove.

Hi Simon and Helen, well done on the inaugural celtic session at the Newport Bowling Club - a great folk initiative for the Western Suburbs. It was good to see some of the NFFC and NBO stalwarts playing along to traditional Australian and celtic tunes. The attendance of some new faces playing or watching can only spread the word and interest in folk music west of the "bridge". These sessions provide another outlet for lovers of traditional tunes and songs, and compliment other NFFC musical evenings scattered across the calendar month. Let's hope for continued success with future sessions. The selection of musicians, singers and storytellers in attendance reflects a depth of cultural heritage links and the need for music to entertain and sooth the soul. I look forward to the next session and beyond!
